Discovering the opportunities and limitations of AI assistance for biotech project management.
Fun Facts
Client: Oncology Dept. at a Large Biotech Company
Location: Greater Seattle Area
Industry: Pharma/Biotech
Employees: 3,000
Located in the Greater Seattle Area, this biotech company specializes in developing and producing therapies for the treatment of cancer. With a rich pipeline spanning from research through clinical development, they have made significant contributions to healthcare.
The Oncology department desired to use Microsoft Copilot to enhance productivity and streamline aspects of operations for project management. They approached Pico Logic for assistance in navigating the implementation of this new technology. They wanted to identify ways they could use Copilot right now, and lay out a roadmap as Copilot functionality continues to evolve.
Oncology's goals were:
Improve collaboration and communication between groups at the company
Automate routine project management tasks
Enhance employee training and development
Use Copilot to help identify patterns and insights
Ultimately reduce the time and cost of bringing new drugs to market
Oncology was restricted by:
Time constraints related to budgets for consulting
Data security and protection concerns
Evolving requirements for rolling out AI at the company level
Creating a Copilot Study for Oncology
Pico Logic created a plan to test Copilot’s ability to save time and maximize efficiency for project managers.
1
Pico Logic conducted a user survey to develop scenarios from Program Management principals to gather use cases that would be most helpful to the groups.
2
The Pico Logic team conducted experiments with Copilot by testing many of the user survey scenarios and made suggestions for additional evaluation.
3
Tests utilized simulated data, including various document types pertinent to project managers and their roles.
Several hundred prompts were tested, focused on scenarios that were most likely to have a substantial impact on time.
Certain scenarios exceeded the current capabilities of Copilot and were not pursued.
4
Pico Logic provided findings to the Oncology team, along with recommendations for the next steps to further define and refine their use of Copilot.
Results and Impact
Pico Logic presented recommendations to the Oncology Department on how to safely proceed with use of Copilot as an AI assistant to project management, in partnership with IT. Oncology now feels confident in their understanding of the tool, and they have a clear roadmap for partnering with IT.
